What is Autistic Burnout/Shutdown?

Autistic burnout or shutdown is a term used to describe a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that can occur in autistic individuals as a result of coping with the demands of daily life and attempting to fit into a neurotypical world. Autistic burnout can be triggered by a variety of factors, including social stress, sensory overload, executive function demands, and masking or camouflaging.

Symptoms of autistic burnout may include fatigue, decreased motivation, difficulty with social communication and interactions, sensory sensitivities, executive dysfunction, and increased anxiety and depression. Burnout can also lead to difficulty with daily tasks and a decrease in overall functioning.

Autistic burnout is not a clinical diagnosis, but rather a term used to describe the experiences of autistic individuals who are struggling to cope with the demands of daily life. It's important to note that burnout is not a personal failure, but rather a natural response to ongoing stress and demands.

Treatment for autistic burnout may involve reducing sensory input and increasing self-care, seeking support from a therapist or mental health professional, and working to develop strategies for managing stress and avoiding burnout in the future. It's important for autistic individuals to prioritize their mental health and well-being, and to seek support when they are struggling.
