PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT
What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment evaluates cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning to assist individuals—both children and adults—with understanding their strengths and limitations. These evaluations are critical in identifying areas where appropriate accommodations can be recommended under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for educational settings, professional boards, and workplaces.
The Evaluation Process: Detailed Overview
Virtual Intake Session:
For Children: Includes parents/guardians, and teachers if available, to gather background information and tailor the assessment.
For Adults: The intake process is integrated with the testing sessions to enhance comfort and efficiency. Information is also obtained from other parties, such as parents, partners, family members, when available.
What is Typically Included in the Assessment?
The assessment includes various components to ensure a comprehensive evaluation:
Comprehensive Intelligence Testing: Assesses overall intellectual functioning and cognitive abilities.
Comprehensive Academic Testing: Evaluates skills across all academic areas to identify strengths and weaknesses.
Neuropsychological Testing: Measures auditory and visual memory, processing speed, visual motor integration, visual perception skills, phonological processing skills, and attention.
For autism testing for children, ADOS-2 testing, as well as neuropsychological assessment of affect recognition, perspective taking, and pragmatic communication (ability to recognize basic social routines, read context and nonverbal cues, and utilize social communication) is also included.
Behavioral and Social/Emotional Assessment: Examines all psychiatric concerns (anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, etc.), personality patterns, emotional regulation, and behavioral patterns to provide a full picture of the individual's social and emotional functioning.
Comprehensive Written Report:
Provides detailed diagnostic impressions and actionable recommendations based on the assessment findings.
Feedback Session:
A thorough discussion of the results and recommendations is held during a final meeting where the comprehensive report is presented to the individual or, for children, to their parents/guardians.
This structured approach ensures that each psychoeducational assessment is thorough and tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual, whether a child or an adult. By gathering a broad spectrum of information, we provide meaningful insights that can significantly impact educational and personal development.
Testing Duration and Setup:
Children: Testing typically spans over 2-4 testing sessions on different days, depending on the child’s age and endurance.
Adults: Generally completed over 2 days, with intake and testing streamlined into the testing sessions.
Preparation: Adults and children are encouraged to arrive rested and nourished to ensure optimal engagement with the testing process.
